The land the park rests on was bought by South Tyneside council in 1953.
Cornthwaite park is located next to the Whitburn Cricket club , is home to a children's play area, bowling green and tennis courts. There are advanture trails leading around the park and the park is a regular winner of the Britain in bloom competition.
